9th Grade Checklist


  • Now that you're in 9th grade, it's time to get serious about your post-secondary plans. Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? What are your favorite classes in school? Check out what majors are available in college!
  • Don't neglect your study habits! Keep up the good work, and continue to improve your study skills.
  • If you don't have one, sign up for a college savings account. Do you know what a college savings account is? Talk to your parents about opening one. Do you know how much you should save for college?
  • Is college a good option for you? Yes! I'm going to college! - Talk to your guidance counselors, teachers, family members, or trusted adults about your plans to go to college! I'm not sure. - Talk to your counselor about what options are available to you, including college!
  • Use Your Plan of Study to keep track of your courses and grades. Enter this year’s courses into Your Plan of Study, and update as you get your final grade. Invite your counselor to view Your Plan of Study!
  • Are there any colleges that you are already interested in? Do you know what they require to be accepted? Use the College Matching Assistant to look up your colleges. Learn more about the different types of colleges.
  • Use Your Portfolio to build an online file of the following documents and notes: Report cards, lists of awards and honors, school and community activities, and volunteer work.
  • Start thinking about the colleges you want to attend. Explore different colleges in California and across the country! Save colleges that you are interested in to the Postsecondary Plans section of Your Portfolio.
  • Find out about AP and other honors-level courses that are offered at your school. Make sure to work these challenging classes into your four-year plan, especially in your senior year!
  • Continue to get involved in campus and community activities.
  • If you didn't take it last year, take the ACT ASPIRE test to evaluate your skills in English, math, reading and science reasoning. It's good practice and your scores won't count towards your college application.
  • How are you spending your summer? Volunteering and educational programs can help give you a better idea about what kind of training or career would be right for you. Check out CCGI’s Summer Transition Guides!
  • College life can be a big change — you're on your own! Try taking some small steps towards independence this year, perhaps with more responsibility around your house.
  • Practice managing your time well. Learning to make the most efficient use of your time can help prevent you from get-ting overwhelmed.
  • Improve your reading, writing, and math skills. These basic skills will serve you well in both college and career.
